Greater Sage-Grouse are an umbrella species, meaning they are charasmatic species chosen for conservation efforts and in turn, protect many other species and habitats. These unique, large birds are a prominent species in sagebrush habitats. Their survival is crucial to the survival of the sagebrush ecosystem.

Male sage grouse "dance" on flat, open spaces called 'leks' in the springtime to mate with female sage grouse. Their display is exciting and the sound created with this display is common to that of upland game species, like the sharp-tailed grouse or greater prairie chicken, using airsacks on their chest to create the thumping sound.
